Are you hearing the Gospel

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Gal 1:6

I wanted to write today on a very important subject. Are you hearing the Gospel? The True gospel of Jesus Christ.

Grace is not something new. Its not something that grace preachers invented and frankly, its not a doctrine but grace is the gospel.

I marvel that ye are so soon removed from Him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:. Gal 1:6

Notice that when you remove the grace of Christ is when you are moving to another gospel.

If He (God) called the Galatians into the grace of Christ and now they were in another gospel, it stands to reason that they were into something other than the grace of Christ.

Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. Gal 1:7

Paul goes on to say in verse 7 that there is NOT another gospel but those who would pervert the true gospel. So who was trying to pervert the gospel and what was the perversion? This is an exhaustive topic so I would challenge you to read the entire book of Galatians yourself. In it you find the one thing that angered the apostle Paul the most. It wasn't the sins of the Corinthian church that angered him, so lets see what does.

The double curse

But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. Gal 1:8-9

Paul pronounces a double curse on anyone who preaches another gospel. I highlighted the fact that he says "we, or an angel from heaven" because I wanted you to see that it doesn't matter how "good" you believe the person, preacher or denomination is that is telling you, if its another gospel, its another gospel.

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you?

This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith?

Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh? Have ye suffered so many things in vain? if it be yet in vain.

He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit, and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? Gal 3:1-4

Paul never spoke this harshly to Corinthian church that was involved in some terrible sin but rather reminded them that they were the temple of the Holy Ghost which IS (present tense) in them. Here he uses the term foolish which some translations simply state...O stupid Galatians.

He asks them a few questions. This is all I want to know from you, did you receive the Holy Spirit by works of the law or the hearing of faith? Did you begin in the Spirit and now you're going to be made perfect in the flesh? By flesh here he's speaking about a belief that what you do in the flesh (circumcision or obedience to the law) justifies you before God. Notice that in verse 1 it says "who"; it was a group of judaizers that had come from Jerusalem and they were trying to tell them that they still needed to obey the law. Paul explains that No man is justified by the law and that it is the very thing that frustrates the grace of God.

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Gal 2:16

I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain. Gal 2:21

Pretty strong statement that if righteousness come by the law that Christ died in vain. In Romans 4:14 it says that the law voids faith and makes the promises of no effect. Because it takes no faith to be under the law.

For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: Rom 4:14

The law is not of faith Gal 3:12. Although we may not have the law today like they did then, everything and anything you try to do to justify yourself to God other than faith in the finished work of Christ has become a law. And it has the same effect of voiding your faith. Today, 2000 years after the cross the law is still being preached as the truth and I want to examine that for a minute. Is the law the truth?

O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? Gal 3:1

He repeats this again in Galatians chapter 5.

You did run well; who did hinder you that you should not obey the truth? Gal 5:7

Many will use this logic and say that the bible is the truth and the law and the 10 commandments are in the bible, it says the law is holy, just and good so it must be the truth.

John 1:17 says:

For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. John 1:17

Notice that grace is on the side of truth. While the law was "given" through a servant Moses, grace and truth came as a person... Jesus Christ. For Paul this was crystal clear that by trying to follow the law, and mixing law and grace, the Galatians were not obeying the truth.

The truth is that righteousness only comes by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. The truth is that its not by works less any man should boast but only by faith in the finished work of Jesus. The word gospel means "good news". The good news is that Jesus finished the work and your part is to believe.

Someone might ask: But you have said nothing about SIN? What about SIN?

1 Tim 1:8 says: But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;

So what is the proper use of the law?

Why the law was our schoolmaster to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. Gal 3:24-25

The purpose of the law was to expose sin and to conclude ALL under sin (Gal 3:22). But even though the law is holy, just and good it was never intended to bring you righteousness but rather to bring you to an end of yourself. It was to make you realized that you can not do it and that you need a savior.

In the same way a mirror exposes your flaws but can do nothing to fix them, so the law exposes your sin but can do nothing to make you righteous.

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Rom 1:16-17

Notice first that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation for EVERYONE that BELIEVES. And second that the gospel is not to reveal your sin but the gospel reveals the righteousness of God from faith to faith. In fact, in Hebrews it says that under the new covenant he remembers your sins and iniquities no more.

To determine if you are hearing the gospel, follow this simple rule. make certain it points you to look & believe on Jesus and what Jesus has done and not to you and what you must do.

This is why the apostle Paul said God forbid that I glory in anything but the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. He didn't glory in his background, in his performance but only in the finished work of Jesus. This is the the good news of the gospel. Grace & Peace
